Tree Felling Is Not Just a Skill, It’s the Ultimate Control Over Safety

In landscape maintenance and forestry operations, felling a large tree is often the most challenging and dangerous task. Many beginners are eager to fire up their chainsaws, but overlook the most critical step—preparation before cutting.

1. Macro-Planning: Don’t Fight an Unprepared Battle
When you arrive at the job site, keep your chainsaw on the ground for a moment. You must first survey the entire scene with a professional eye:

Check for Obstacles: Observe if there are high-voltage power lines, roads, or buildings in the vicinity. If the forestry area is near a road or high-traffic area, you must deploy warning signs in visible locations in advance.

Assess Natural Conditions: Wind direction and strength directly impact the tree's fall direction, and the slope of the terrain cannot be ignored.

Give the Tree a "Health Check": Are there rot or cracks in the trunk? Are there dead, unstable branches in the canopy? These are "ticking time bombs" that could drop at any moment.

2. Maintain the Safety Red Line: Strictly Enforce Safe Distances
Before you make the first cut, the area must be cleared.

Team Operations: Ensure all non-operators retreat to a safe distance of at least twice the height of the tree.

Solo Operations: The safety distance must still be at least equal to the tree's height.

Clothing Requirements: All workers must wear high-visibility fluorescent jackets or vests to ensure everyone is clearly visible against the complex forest background.

3. Go with the Flow: Find the Tree's "Natural Direction of Fall"
Every tree has a natural falling direction, determined by its lean, uneven branch distribution, and canopy weight (such as snow load). If you are unsure of the tree's lean, step back a bit and use a plumb line (like a nut tied to a string) for an accurate measurement.

While advanced lumberjacks can force a tree against its natural fall direction using techniques and tools, this significantly increases risk and physical exertion. 
Yardmaris strongly advises: Unless absolutely necessary, try to follow the tree's natural fall direction. This is especially crucial for dangerous trees with weak timber, like dead or rotten trees—always choose the easiest and most natural direction to fell them.

5. Clear the Path: Remove Undergrowth
Thoroughly clear the brush and small trees around the base of the main tree and along the intended felling path. This not only gives you a clear workspace for swinging the chainsaw but also prevents this vegetation from obstructing your view when judging the fall direction.

6. Standardized Pruning: Remove Bothersome Low Branches
To ensure the felling process goes smoothly, you need to prune off the lower branches in advance.

Use the trunk as a physical barrier between yourself and the chainsaw.

Never perform any chainsaw cutting operations above shoulder height.

6. Plan Your "Lifeline": Your Escape Route

Route Planning: Plan and clear your retreat path diagonally backward at about a 45-degree angle on both sides, opposite to the felling direction.

Remove Stumbling Blocks: Completely clear the path of branches, brush, and other obstacles that could cause you to trip.

Beware of Secondary Hazards: When the tree falls, you must stand at a safe distance, at that 45-degree angle behind the tree. Note that uneven ground or thick branches can cause the falling trunk to roll sideways, bounce up, or slide backward. Also, always keep your head up and watch out for dead branches shaken loose from the canopy.
