Tree Felling——Block/Pulley

A block or pulley is a convenient way to redirect the winching path to get the operator out of the risk area. It is attached to an anchor point using a sling and a carabiner or a shackle, preferably made of steel.

Using the block correctly – and safely, requires the proper training and experience. Safety first – always!

The block should be of good quality and requisite strength. Always consider the working load limit (WLL) relative to the winch used. Keep in mind that the force at the block can be double the force on the winch, since the block must resist both the force from the winch and force from the tree.

Systematic Approach: Integrating Felling Wedges and Lifting Tongs
When processing trees with complex canopies or a severely offset center of gravity, the pulling efficiency of a pulley system can be significantly enhanced by utilizing synergistic forestry tools. After applying initial tension with the winch, driving in high-strength felling wedges at the felling cut provides a remarkable initial lifting force, giving you greater control and precision over the breaking direction of the hinge.

Furthermore, during the ground skidding phase after felling, combining the directional block system with heavy-duty lifting tongs creates a highly efficient workflow. The tongs rely on their self-locking jaws to securely grip the timber, while the pulley alters the winching elevation. This upward lift guides the log smoothly over ground obstacles like rocks and stumps, substantially reducing friction and kinetic energy loss.

PPE & Safety Standards in High-Tension Environments
Block and winch operations involve extremely high rigging tension and the ever-present danger of line snapback. In these complex, high-strain work environments, establishing a reliable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) barrier that meets strict international standards is absolutely vital:

Leg Protection: Any operator within the high-risk work zone must wear cut-resistant chainsaw chaps or trousers that comply with ISO 11393 or ASTM F1897 standards to protect against sudden mechanical impacts or accidental chainsaw contact.

Hand Protection: Setting up block anchors, handling tensioned cables, and operating lifting tongs requires excellent grip and hand protection. Always wear highly abrasion-resistant work gloves certified to the EN 388 mechanical protection standard.

Head and Face Protection: Trees under tension are highly susceptible to dislodging deadwood or branches from the canopy. Wearing a safety helmet integrated with a protective visor and ear defenders, tested to the ANSI Z89.1 standard, is your ultimate line of defense for life safety.

In advanced tree felling, specialized rigging systems and compliant personal protection go hand in hand. Every successful and safe pull is built upon a precise understanding of physical forces and an uncompromising commitment to proper safety equipment.
